Random PSA of if you have a PC tower please remember to check the air vents and fans for dust build up, especially during the warmer months of the year when electronics overheat anyway
I had to open my tower up to install a new hard drive today and after air blasting the dust out it's running damn near silently, and my toes no longer cook under the desk, so it's worth doing

If you don’t want to read a rant someone has about a stupid task they have for their coding job, feel free to skip over this post.
So.
My current job is to make pages for a program my team is creating. Specifically, I’m taking old pages and remaking them using newer, less outdated frameworks and services. For some pages it’s very simple. This is not one of them.
The current page I’m working on is actually 50+ pages in a trench coat, and each of them have their own unique combination of tabs and fields that the user can mess around with. Doing each of those individually would be a nightmare, but luckily, the original page is able to generate all 50 of its sub-pages through a single service. That service is 2k lines of code, but it’s not the worst thing in the world.
But as time goes on, and my coworkers and I make our way through this code, we realize whoever made this original page was a madman.
Fields get saved in strange ways. Dates that should be saved separately as numbers are instead combined into one singular string alongside other data for no good reason. (ex: “6/10 | 6/16 | false” yes with those “|” in between them, no I don’t understand why)
Meanwhile, it’s a 50/50 whether a dropdown comes with the list of options the user can select, or if the list was hardcoded into the UI.
But the thing that broke me came recently.
While testing, we found that 3 of the 50+ pages weren’t working right. Nothing about them stands out, there’s nothing unique to just these three, and they aren’t even next to each other. Why aren’t they working? Well, that’s because, FOR SOME REASON, these three pages aren’t included in that 2k line service I mentioned. For seemingly no reason, these three have their own service. A service, that is three times as long.
Three.
Times.
6k lines of code that need to be sorted through.
We don’t know why. Our best guess is that these three came first, but then someone else came in and made a “simpler” (but still insane) way to do the rest, and just forgot to include the first three in that.
I’ve been working on this page for months, and I fear what I might discover next.

#The comment was like My TA (Sylvia?)#and like so proud of them for spelling my name correct#there were also less positive comments but they were not specific so that's not useful#first of all they didn't specify which TA#secondly they were just like: They often had no clue#like when tell me when I had no clue#because yes sometimes I had no clue but I think I managed to find 99% of everyone's bugs#(it was a mostly programming course so they mainly came with hey we implemented this but it doesn't work)#if finding bugs was easy there wouldn't exist so many bugs in finished software#but maybe it was the other TA because I had 3 times as many students in my class in the end#though I don't think so#I made an original post#anyway I'm very kind that's what counts

There's a segment of industrial technology known as "machine vision" (or occasionally "smart cameras"), which can, for example, take a photo of a conveyor belt and identify the x,y coordinates of all the green objects, or the size of the largest object, or the relative angle of the logo you've already taught it to recognize. So that your robot can pick up all the green objects, or your quality report can record the size of the glue dots, or your quality team can be alerted to fix the logo sticker. I haven't heard people calling it "AI" - it's really just a lot of image processing - but that's the kind of thing you'd want to use to identify dishes vs non dishes.
It won't work in a normal home, of course -- it really works best with an unmoving camera in a photo booth with no shadows and nobody's hands in view -- a setup that even industrial factories often fail to provide& maintain -- but it's kind of cool that it exists at all!
#I've heard so many managers say oh we'll just use a smart camera to do that#so i order the thousands of dollars of software and cameras and send them to the factory#and the factory calls us and says it's not working idk why but you gotta come fix it#and i get there and they slapped the darn thing under a skylight next to a walkway with no curtains whatsoever#and the factory's software team has overwritten the program so it just always gives the green light no matter what#and the boss is like we can't change the location. or put up curtains. or stop the team from changing the program. just make it work#👿#what you actually wanted was an entirely different sensor at a fraction of the cost but noooo you had to have the shiniest tech#and now i gotta bill you for a week of my time spent fiddling with camera settings and begging for curtains
